Concrete is a porous material. This makes it easy for water to seeps into the cracks and tiny holes. Once temperature drop water expands as it freezes thus causing further cracks and larger holes. This process is known as freeze-thaw action. 
Cracks present in reinforced concrete can result in corrosion of the rebars within the concrete. This can cause severe structural damage.
